The 39th Tokyo Midtown Design Hub exhibition (Participating Organizations: Japan Institute of Design Promotion, Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc., Musashino Art University Design Lounge) titled "( ) mo ( ) mo ( ) mo ―Design and ways of seeing―", will be held from April 12 to May 12, 2013. The exhibit, targeting people in their teens and twenties, focus on various "designs" that can be found in everyday life. The word "design" is commonly used for final products of fashion and interior design, or websites and applications that have a clear visual concept. However, many objects with "design" exist in everyday life. One may find such objects at school or at the shopping mall, or any other place that people frequent and are familiar with. Design, at times, could be found hidden in places where no one could have imagined.

The "momomo" exhibit picks up ten designers and editors to choose and present, from their unique perspectives, what they think that "are also design". Some of the items may seem "far from design", but by displaying them all together, we hope the exhibit stimulates interest of the younger generation towards design, by creating a place to experience how fun design is.

※The exhibit is called the "momomo" exhibit for short.

Outline

Title: Tokyo Midtown Design Hub 39th Exhibition: ( ) mo ( ) mo ( ) mo -Design and ways of seeing-

Dates: 12th April (Fri) - 12th May (Sun) 2013 11am-7pm

Open everyday during the exhibition

Venue: Tokyo Midtown Design Hub
(5th floor, Midtown Tower, 9-7-1 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo)
Admission: Free

Special website for momomo: http://momomoten.com/

Host/Promotion/Organization: Tokyo Midtown Design Hub

Co-Sponsor: mt-masking tape (Kamoi Kakoshi Co., Ltd.)

Planning/Art Direction: So Hashizume

Language Direction: Hiroshi Eguchi

Exhibit Layout: Daisuke Motogi

Editing Support/Design: Shohei Iida

Related event:

"( ) mo ( ) mo ( ) mo junior high school"

(momomo junior high)

Curators of the "momomo" exhibit will teach at a one-day event "momomo junior high" during the exhibit. Tokyo Midtown Design Hub (participating organizations: Japan Institute of Design Promotion, Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc., Musashino Art University Design Lounge) celebrates its 5th anniversary with the 33rd exhibition "Credible Designs" from March 30 to May 27. On the theme "credibility and design," 51 distinguished creators present their ideas of what constitutes credibility in design.
Since its opening in 2007, Tokyo Midtown Design Hub has connected people, activities and possibilities through design, expanding and nurturing the network. On the 5th anniversary, we strongly feel that the most needed factor in design today is "credibility" and "a sense of assurance in that specific design."
Our daily life is surrounded by shapes, colors, sounds, signs, brands, space, communication methods and all things that people created based on their concepts. They are, in fact, all different forms of design. We rely on design and its reliability is the base of our comfortable life and hopeful future.

"What kind of design do we put our trust in?
Why do we trust that specific design?"

Any design starts from consciousness, concept or point of view. In this exhibition, visitors can deepen their awareness of "credibility in design" through the creators' perspectives.
At the venue, 51 creators in design-related industries present their concepts of "credible design" with messages along with impressive illustrations by an artist. The visitors get to feel firsthand who believes in what kind of design. By questioning "what credible design is," we hope to shed light on different perspectives and give the opportunity to face the possibilities for "future of design."

Exhibition Content
51 creators in design-related industries such as designers, architects, photographers and researchers present their ideas of "credible design" with words along with illustrations by an artist.

Description
Title: Tokyo Midtown Design Hub 5th anniversary / 33rd Exhibition
      "Credible Designs"
Date: March 30 (Fri.) - May 27 (Sun.) 11:00-19:00
       Open everyday during the exhibition
Venue: Tokyo Midtown Design Hub
        (5th floor, Midtown Tower, 9-7-1Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo)
Admission: Free
Organizer: Tokyo Midtown Design Hub
(Japan Institute of Design Promotion, Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc., Musashino Art University Design Lounge)
Editing, Copy Writing: Ikuko Noda
Art Direction: All Right Graphics
Venue Design: Landscape Products
Illustration: Shohei Morimoto
Photography: Tomoki Hirokawa

Exhibitors (in hiragana order):
Katsumi Asaba (art director), Tomoko Azumi (product designer), Hisae Igarashi (professor at Musashino Art University), Junko Ishida (writer), Hiromi Inokuchi (professor at Musashino Art University), Soichi Ueda (producer), Yusuke Kakei (designer), Kaoru Kasai (art director / graphic designer), Mitsuo Katsui (graphic designer), Takashi Kawashima (editor), Caramelimagine (planning and design group), Yoshihiro Komuta (design producer), Yasuo Kondo (designer), Chiho Sasaki (experience design), Taku Satoh (graphic designer), Manabu Shiraishi (associate professor at Musashino Art University), Toshihiro Jinnouchi (professor at Musashino Art University), Norito Shinmura (graphic designer), Reiko Sudo (design director), TSUTTO TsutomuTakahashi (art director/designer), Manabu Tago (art director/designer), Masayuki Tanaka (professor at Musashino Art University), Kousuke Tsumura (professor at Musashino Art University), Yusaku Terayama (professor at Musashino Art University), Masamichi Toyama (corporate manager), Akiyoshi Totoki (professor at Musashino Art University), Kazufumi Nagai (art director), Kazumasa Nagai (graphic designer), Rikako Nagashima (art director / designer), Keisuke Nagatomo (graphic designer), Shunsaburo Nakahara (professor at Musashino Art University), Daisuke Nakayama (artist / art director), Noriko Hashida (product designer), Kazuhiko Hachiya (media artist), Kazunari Hattori (graphic designer / art director), Hideshi Hamaguchi (director), Kenya Hara (designer), Keiko Hirano (designer / visioner), Naoko Hirota (product designer), Masaaki Hiromura (graphic designer), Osamu Fukushima (art director), Masahiko Furukata (associate professor at Musashino Art University), Kentaro Kai (designer), Kozo Shimoyama (designer), Bandai Matsuo (designer), Tatsuya Matsui (robot designer), Shin Matsunaga (graphic designer), Takashi Mochizuki (photographer), Akiko Moriyama (professor at Musashino Art University), Ryo Yamazaki (landscape designer / community designer), Shinichi Yonetoku (professor at Musashino Art University)

Related Events
■ Opening Reception: March 30 (Fri.) 18:30- (Open to all people)
■ Talking sessions by the exhibitors and more (For details, please refer to the Tokyo Midtown Design Hub website)
Tokyo Midtown Design Hub (participating organizations: Japan Institute of Design Promotion [JDP] and Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc. [JAGDA]) will hold an exhibition from Friday January 13th to Sunday February 5th, to showcase all the 1,200 ornaments contributed to the UNICEF Tree of Prayers Project in 2011.

Objective

The UNICEF Tree of Prayers Project was launched, to give thought to children in affected areas on Christmas after over six months since the disaster, and to bring about smiles on their faces by gathering the power of design across companies and universities.

The Japan Committee for UNICEF has continued support activities toward children including those attending kindergartens and nursery school in Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima prefectures. As many of them have barely held the seasonal events after the disaster, we decided to make their irreplaceable Christmas of 2011 very special.

In response to the call, professional designers in advertising and art industries and art students volunteered to design Christmas ornaments for "tree of prayers" with warm wishes.

This ornamented "big trees" was exhibited at eight places in Ginza, Yurakucho, Sendai and Kesennuma, and were also delivered to kindergartens and nursery schools in affected areas. Fund-raising events to present ornaments to those who made donations, were also held at the venues.

With help of the Japan Committee for UNICEF, the trees were sent to 35 schools in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima. A total of 100 volunteers also held workshops to make ornaments with 900 children and presented many Christmas gifts donated by sponsors. Thus 1,000 kinds of amazing smiles were born.

The Design Hub exhibition will feature all the 1,200 ornaments contributed to the project.
Project reports and films covering the activities will be also presented.
Be sure to keep your eyes on Japan's one of the largest creative projects that unified power of design.
Tokyo Midtown Design Hub (participating organizations: Japan Institute of Design Promotion [JDP], Japan Graphic Designers Association Inc. [JAGDA], and Kyushu University Design Tokyo Lounge) will hold 31st Exhibition "Handkerchiefs for Tohoku Children" from Friday November 18th.

Objective

When somebody buys a handkerchief, another handkerchief is sent to a child.
JAGDA members across Japan express their thoughts in handkerchiefs.
To help somebody feel kindness, and to help somebody be kind to somebody else.
Through this exhibition, design will make the world a little kinder place.

What can design do?
We need to keep answering this question from now on.

The Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA) will hold an exhibition intended to present gifts of handkerchiefs to children in areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, to help them feel a little better, as part of its project to aid reconstruction after the earthquake.

Every time a visitor to the exhibition buys a handkerchief, another handkerchief with the same design will be sent to a child.

The exhibition was held at the Taipei World Design Expo in October as a presentation for the world's designers to express gratitude for the support for reconstruction Japan has received. At the same time in Japan, the traveling exhibition started in Osaka, and exhibition and sales will be held at our main venue, Tokyo Midtown Design Hub from November.

Design definitely makes people happy. We would like to work together to prove this concept. Be sure to keep your eye on this activity, Japan's one of the largest creative charity projects, as it demonstrates to the fullest extent the power of JAGDA as a national organization.
